Have you ever wondered what you could do for the environment comfortably from home? If your answer is yes, then let me introduce you to Ecosia, a way to help replenish the forests while browsing the web. And if your answer was no, you can always learn something new 😉
What is Ecosia?
Born in Berlin, it’s a search engine, managed by around 13 employees, that since it’s birth in December 2009 has raised over $1.5 million for forests protection. It was launched concurrently with the ONU conference on climate change in Copenhagen. Their mission? Planting over a billion trees by 2020, an ambitious but worthy goal.
How does it work?
Ecosia makes most of its money not differently from blogs: from advertisements shown next to search results. Every time we click on the ads, that automatically generates revenue. Since it’s basically a non-profit organization, they donate 80% of their money to programs such as ‘WWF’, ‘Plant a Billion Trees’ and ‘Great Green Wall’. Another way for them to raise money is through EcoLinks. This means that a percentage of our online purchase done using their search engine goes to the cause.
What’s the catch?
No catch, however the problem that people have with this engine is that it runs on Bing, not Google. This means that the search results are a bit different. However, this teeny-tiny detail can be easily overlooked for the greater good. So, by just downloading the software and searching a couple of times a day you could help to replenish the earth’s forests. Also, Ecosia publish all of their monthly business reports and receipts online, so everything is done in the light of day.
Even at cost of sounding cliché, you have the power to make a difference. So, what are you waiting for? You can download the extension for free here and don’t forget to share this article with your friends and family. Let’s spread the word!
